    Big Brothers Big Sisters Partnership

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska has been working with Hanshew since April 2015. When Hanshew began their partnership with BBBS, Hanshew agreed to have a clothing donation bin outside of the school. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska gives Hanshew 10 cents per pound of clothing that is donated at the donation bin. Hanshew has used the money to buy food for families in need of a meal for the holidays. Families can drop bags of clothing off to donate at the red clothing bin in front of Hanshew. To try to give back, Hanshew has hung a student created Big Brothers Big Sisters sign in the school’s foyer. Hanshew students also send holiday cards and thank you notes.

The partnership between Hanshew and the IBEW has benefitted Hanshew's students in two important ways. First, it has helped provide some of the most economically disadvantaged students at Hanshew with materials and moral support to be successful as students. Second The IBEW 1547 has provided information on career options outside of the traditional college track. The IBEW 1547 has provided successful role models in the school for students to interact with as they begin to explore their own future careers.
