    In accordance with the Ê®·ÖÁùºÏ²Ê Policy for Battle of the Books, summaries for the titles on the lists are provided for parents each August. We appreciate that families talk about book selections prior to students reading the titles, and hope our award-winning battlers will gear up early for the battles by starting on the tentative title list soon.

     

    Battle of the Books Program Information

    Battle Of The Books is a voluntary AkASL reading program which is endorsed by the Ê®·ÖÁùºÏ²Ê. Fire Lake students in grades 3-4 and 5-6 read specific titles and answer questions about the books, play Kahoot games/quizzes, hold roundtable book discussions, etc. "Battles" are held at the school, district, and state levels. We also run practice and 'mock' battles in the library with our 2nd graders who wish to participate.

     

    Summaries for the Battle of the Books titles are available for review and can be found in the library and linked above. Everyone is eligible to read the books, but to officially participate in the program, students must have a signed permission slip on file with their building coach. Interested students in grades 3rd through 6th can pick up the required reading lists and synopses from Mrs. Sherburne in the library or download lists from Ê®·ÖÁùºÏ²Ê-BOB or AKASL. 

     

    Background: What is the Battle of the Books? The Battle of the Books is a statewide Alaskan reading motivational and comprehension program sponsored by the Alaska Association of School Librarians. The goals of the program are to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension and promote academic excellence.

     

    Students who wish to compete can read and discuss the books, quiz each other on the contents, and then compete in teams of not more than four students to correctly answer questions based on the books. Questions always begin with the words "in which book..." and the answer is the title/author from the list. Teams participate at the school level, then Fire Lake team winners will be able to compete at the Ê®·ÖÁùºÏ²Ê Tournament(s).

    The Alaska Association of School Librarians accepts suggestions for book titles to be included in the Battle lists under the "Coaches' Corner”
