• Academic Services

AKSD provides opportunities for students to learn within a Bi-Lingual/Bi-Cultural model of education. Each student’s individual needs are assessed for the best access to academic services as written in the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). These services may include, but not limited to the following: Audiology supports, American Sign Language support (ASL), Counseling, DHH self-contained classroom, Listening and Spoken Language support (LSL), Speech/Language support, and general education classroom with an educational interpreter. Students are also able to participate within extracurricular activities with supports.

Our DHH self-contained classrooms utilize American Sign Language as the primary mode of communication. Students are engaged in all core academics through this mode of communication with additional services provided through the use of specialists in LSL, ASL, and Speech/Language. AKSD also has a counselor that works in conjunction with classroom teachers to provide important Social Emotional Skills for all students, pre-k through the ACT program.

Students that are with AKSD in a general education classroom also received the supports of our specialists and counselor. These students also have the opportunities to work with an educational interpreter and have additional supports as needed and outlined in their IEP. Educational interpreting services are also provided for any extracurricular activity, elective classes and/or pull-out classes (i.e., P.E., music).

    • Advocacy and Empowerment
    • Education and Career Planning
    • Work Habits, Skills, and Attitudes
    • Independent Living
    • Ê®·ÖÁùºÏ²Ê Roles, Responsibilities and Resources

During Transition class, students will become more familiar with the and . These two agencies are not only important IEP team members, but vital post secondary resources for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

    Vocational Options

Students have a wide range of vocational options. Courses at King Tech High School that students often take include auto mechanics, carpentry, child care, printing, food service and computer technology.

Ê®·ÖÁùºÏ²Ê-based training for vocational programs and transition after high school has been popular and successful with AKSDHH students. Placement into the Adult Ê®·ÖÁùºÏ²Ê Transition (ACT) is determined by the IEP team during the student's enrollment in high school. Teachers, interpreters and teacher assistants help students toward success in these courses. On-the-job work experience and after school jobs are a natural part of these vocational education options.
