The National Junior Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle-level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1929.

 

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in official Honor Society activities. NHS and NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

 

The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) officially established NJHS in 1929, 8 years after it founded the National Honor Society for high school students. Under the leadership of Dr. Edward Rynearson, principal of the Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, the organization grew from the original Alpha Chapter at the Fifth Avenue School to more than 1,000 chapters by 1930. Equipped with a constitution, an emblem and motto, and a group of dedicated principals as coordinators, the new NJHS organization quickly developed into one of the country's leading educational groups. 

 

Five main purposes have guided chapters of NJHS from the beginning: to create enthusiasm for scholarships; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote leadership; to encourage responsible citizenship, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools. These purposes also translate into the criteria used for membership selection in each local chapter.

 

 

 

Selection for membership is by a faculty review of applicants and is based on outstanding scholarship, citizenship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities. Members who resign or are dismissed are no longer eligible for membership or its benefits and they may not reapply for membership. Once selected, members will be expected to attend meetings and participate in NJHS service projects, activities, and fundraisers.

1. To be eligible for membership, the candidate must be a sixth-grader OR a seventh-grader at Clark Middle School.

2. The selection of members to the chapter shall be by a majority vote of the faculty council. 

3. All faculty members will review the applicants’ names. Students who do not promote service, leadership, citizenship, and character in the classroom will not be considered for membership. 

All applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better as their overall score for each core class on the report card from the first two quarters.

All applicants are required to have documented and verified community service hours. 

Students will be asked to detail their leadership experiences while attending Clark Middle School or any other middle school they have attended.

All applicants will be required to submit one essay, discussing how they meet the pillars of NJHS.

Students are required to include a letter of recommendation from 2-3 adults who can speak to the pillars of character, leadership, citizenship, and service.
