• Campbell STEM staff meet in weekly PLCs. The goal is to create STEM units based around state standards. Students are taught the Engineering Design Process and use the steps throughout the day in all instruction. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity. Extracurricular activities are offered regularly, including LEGO/Robotics Club, FabLab, MakerSpace, and Innovator’s Club. STEM days are held throughout the year, focusing on student explorations, Day of Caring, STEAM, and a STEM-based field day.

     

     Every day students recite our Campbell Pledge and are reminded of our school mission which is to Support, Teach, Empower, and Motivate. Each month a character trait is spotlighted and discussed during the daily announcements. An example is the Month of April is Responsibility. Responsibility is discussed each day to include being responsible for yourself, body, academics, attendance, and behavior. Our students are encouraged to embrace failures as learning opportunities and push on when they struggle, encouraging a growth mindset. 

     

    The instructional environment engages all learners in real-world problem-solving. Assessment occurs in various forms through both formative and summative. Campbell STEM staff assess students learning multiple ways. Assessments range from projects, presentations, technology gathering devices, discussions, paper-based tests, and student choice to demonstrate mastery. Grade-level rubrics are created by staff with students playing an active part in the creation of the rubric. Deep dive data assessment occurs during PLC with the team supporting each other to determine next steps. Staff members often step out of the role of instructor and become a facilitator of their learning as they engage in self-directed learning.

     

    Campbell STEM teaches students to work collaboratively with others. Our school focuses on CHAMPS and Kelso’s Choices. In addition, staff models how to work collaboratively. Instruction for Campbell STEM students includes confidence building, becoming an independent learner, and being in charge of their learning. Students are encouraged to be responsible for their learning by tracking their progress and seeking help and/or guidance when needed.

     

    While PLCs are a strong part of schoolwide STEM instructional planning, staff have voiced concerns that they need more time to work in collaboration and more guidance in determining the next steps after deep data dives. In order to address these concerns, staff will be provided with additional time for PLC work through designated staff meetings. To address next steps after deep data dives, additional professional development will be provided for all staff.

     

    We will continue to implement CHAMPS and Kelso’s Choices; however, we will focus on becoming a PBIS school during the 2024-2025 school year. A school representative was sent to a PBIS conference in April 2024. In May 2024, the STEM Foundations Leadership Team will meet to attend a PBIS district conference and establish school goals, timelines, and the program for the 2024-2025 school year.

     

    Our goal is to develop STEM units that incorporate various skills students need to effectively collaborate, grow as a learner, and critically think. This will enhance students' ability to self-assess and self-direct their STEM learning while they are a student at Campbell STEM and throughout their learning experiences.
