    The ACT Program is part of the Ê®·ÖÁùºÏ²Ê. The ACT program is a post-secondary community-based instructional program for adult students (18 to 21 years old) needing additional transitional support after completing the required core credits at their neighborhood school.

    AKCIS Career Planning Tool

    The Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education, in partnership with the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, offers AKCIS – a free online tool. AKCIS is a free online program with college/career planning activities; allowing students to develop a personal portfolio account to plan and track education and career plans. This website houses many other resources on planning and financial aid.

    Alaska Career Ready

    Alaska Career Ready is a joint effort between the Departments of Labor and Workforce Development and Education and Early Development that allows students and adult job-seekers to evaluate their readiness for work, college, and occupational training and to improve their basic skills valued by employers and educators.

     

    Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education

    This Alaska State website has information on loans, scholarships, grants, exploring career options, and a money-smart video series.

     

    Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development Vocational Rehabilitation

    DVR helps Alaskans with disabilities get and keep good jobs. It has transition tools for teachers, parents, and students. Referral information for these programs: DVR,

    JOBZ Club, and Summer Work Program.

     

    Alaska State School for Deaf and Hard of Hearing

    The Alaska State School for Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides pre-k through 12th-grade educational options for deaf and hard of hearing students that fosters and supports the development of both American Sign Language and English. They offer the Transition Readiness Class designed to assist secondary Deaf and hard of hearing students with their individualized post-secondary plan.

    Bridge, Fairbanks School District

    The mission of BRIDGE is to assist young adults with developmental disabilities in gaining skills, knowledge, and appropriate behaviors to become successful individuals, citizens, and workers in the community.

     

    CITC Tribal Vocational Rehabilitation

    CITC’s Tribal Vocational Rehabilitation program (TVR) assists Alaska Native and American Indian individuals with disabilities in gaining or maintaining employment.

     

    Do-It Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology

    DO-IT (Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology) serves to increase the successful participation of individuals with disabilities in challenging academic programs such as those in science, engineering, mathematics, and technology. Primary funding for DO-IT is provided by the National Science Foundation, the State of Washington, and the U.S. Department of Education. DO-IT is a collaboration of UW Information and Technology and the Colleges of Engineering and Education at the University of Washington.

     

    Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

    The free application for Federal Student Aid. This is a necessary step to apply for Pell grants and federal loans.

     

    Job Corps (Palmer, Alaska)

    Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 to 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training. At Alaska Job Corps Center, we support the Job Corps program’s mission to teach eligible young people the skills they need to become employable and independent and place them in meaningful jobs or further education. The maximum age limit may be waived if the applicant is a person with a documented disability. This is an income eligible program. There are dorms for on-campus living. 

    Next Step Program, Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District

    The Next Step Program (NSP) prepares students to achieve a high level of independence as they prepare to enter adult life. Through a transition partnership with parents, program staff, and community resources, each student can achieve their greatest potential. The NSP is designed for students who have a current IEP and have participated in high school special education programs (i.e. self-contained/intensive resource and behavioral support programs).

    This unique program provides real-life work experience to help young people with significant disabilities make transitions from school to adult life. There is an application process. Locations in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Central Peninsula, and Mat-Su.
