• High School ASAA Music Participation Policy - updated May 2023

    In order for a student to participate in the ASAA All-State or ASAA Solo/Ensemble Music Festival, he or she must meet all eligibility requirements and be currently enrolled in the corresponding music performance ensemble at their school of eligibility. Exceptions can be made for piano/guitar/harp at the director's discretion. Any further exceptions would be considered on a case-by-case basis and must be approved by the school director, school activities AP, and the Ê®·ÖÁùºÏ²Ê Assistant Director of Music.

     

    High schools offer music classes as electives. The elective program is divided into two categories: 

     

    Standard Electives

    Standard electives are based on curricula that have been written and approved by the district and are more traditional in nature. They usually have instructors who are specialists in that particular elective area.

    • Band
      • Band I, Concert; Band II, Symphonic; Band III, Wind Ensemble; Jazz Band
    • Chorus
      • Mixed, Intermediate, Concert, Treble, Tenor-Bass, Swing
    • Orchestra
      • Orchestra I, Preparatory; Orchestra II, Concert; Orchestra III, Symphonic Strings

     

    Alternative Electives

    Alternative electives are special interest electives that provide learning opportunities for students based on student interest, faculty expertise and community involvement. These are courses that are designed and implemented by the school and teaching staff at each school site to support and expand the regular curriculum.

    • Guitar – Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
    • Ukulele – Beginning, Intermediate
    • Music Appreciation
    • Music Theory and Composition – I, II, AP
    • Keyboard
    • Percussion Ensemble
    • Solo and Small Ensembles
    • Vocal Technique – I, II
    • Music Entertainment Technology

     

    Not all classes listed are offered each year or at each particular school. All high schools offer some classes in Band, Chorus, and Orchestra.

    High school ensembles generally present several public concerts throughout the school year. Check with individual teachers for concert schedules. The more advanced groups also often participate in area festival concerts and large group festivals.
